🍵 About Horii Shichimeien

Horii Shichimeien, established in the 16th century, is one of the oldest and most historically significant tea producers in Japan. Located in Uji, Kyoto, the brand traces its legacy back to the “Seven Famous Tea Gardens of Uji” (Uji Shichimeien), designated by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu during the Muromachi period. Today, Horii Shichimeien is the only remaining tea house directly connected to that original heritage.

Known for its deeply traditional cultivation and crafting techniques, Horii’s matcha — including blends like Narino, Shichimei no Mukashi, and Okunoyama — is prized for its refined umami, historical depth, and distinctive terroir. The teas are often used in formal tea ceremonies (chaji) and national tea competitions, celebrated for their elegance, clarity, and balance.

More than just a tea brand, Horii Shichimeien is a living bridge between Japan’s tea past and present — quietly carrying centuries of philosophy, precision, and reverence into every bowl.
